The team arrived by hollow tree and headed north to the village. They entered the town without incident. The market square was shutting down for the night. Philip spotted a woman sweeping her front step and asked her where to find Giles. She told them he lived “just around the corner, second house on the right.” They found the house easily enough, and Giles welcomed them inside. The team delivered their scrolls, as per their mission, and Giles invited them to stay for supper. They stayed and enjoyed fellowship. Giles told them of the ministry in the area. He told how a young man named Jamas had recently died of a heart attack. The whole town was shaken up about the matter, especially, his widow, Klaio. Giles talked about how he was trying to teach the people about the immortality of the soul. He gave them a couple of WordRunes that can be useful for comforting those who are grieving. The team chatted a bit about what a believer can do to comfort those who are grieving.
As the team said their goodbyes, they met a crippled man on the street. He introduced himself as Japas, the brother of the recently departed Jamas. He expressed concern for his sister in law, Klaio. She had gone to the cemetery to grieve, but it was getting late, and Japas feared she wouldn’t remember to come back in time. He’d go himself, but he was lame.
The team accepted the mission and made their way to the graveyard. As they approached, they could hear crying, then the creaking of skeletons, and then a scream. They rushed the rest of the way just in time to see a woman being dragged into a crypt by skeletons, and the entryway closing behind them. They heard a curious shattering sound, but didn’t have time to wonder about it, since there were several skeletons in the graveyard, so they drew weapons to fight. Except Starflower, she fell under a despair enchantment and did not participate in the battle. Regulus leaped over tombstones to attack a skeleton. William stepped around another tombstone. Philip took on two or three skeletons at once. Bill destroyed several.
Once all the skeletons had been vanquished, and Starflower rescued, they turned their attention to the crypt entrance. Small stone tiles were all over the ground, which must have been the shattering they had heard. They managed to put it back together on a panel on the crypt door. The door opened!
They mustered their courage and stepped into the dark, creepy crypt. William didn’t want to go in, but after seeing the others enter, he was willing to try. Starflower said a night light wordrune, and Philip lit a torch. They followed a narrow passageway to a chamber. In the chamber, they heard noisy insects that unnerved them. They kept searching and found another exit.
They stepped into another chamber and came across a room full of skeletons. Two skeletons were putting a tied up Klaio into a burial shelf, and were in the process of putting a lid over it. There was also a creature they had never seen before: A Barrow Wight. Similar to a skeleton, the top half of a skeleton was floating in the air. There was still rotting flesh on the creature, and the eyes were glowing blue. Starflower was terrorized, and stood in place, paralyzed with fear. Philip and Edward advanced on the Barrow-Wight, while Regulus, Bill and William starting taking down skeletons. The team survived the battle with only a few minor scrapes and scratches.
The pulled the cover off the shelf and untied Klaio. She was terrified out of her mind, and didn’t seem to hear or see them. They counselled Starflower, and she calmed down. The team carried Klaio out of the crypt. Once outside, she seemed to calm down a bit. They rushed back to town, and the guards were just about to close the gate. They made it inside. They brought Klaio to Giles’ house. Once she was safe and sound, she was able to talk again. Japas came to see her. She told them about her late husband. They shared some Scripture with her, which she said brought some comfort. She then went to rest in her bed. After Klaio was in bed, Japas asked the Lightraiders about the sacred scroll passage they had read. They saw an opening, and shared the Great Rescue with him, which he accepted.
The team spent the night on Giles’ floor, and then went home the next morning.
