Rerun: The Lightraider Test take 2

Writer: Zachariah KenneyZachariah Kenney

So, the original boxed set we had only contained two adventures. The LightRaider Test and the Rescue of the Sacred Scrolls. While we were playing through the Rescue of the Sacred Scrolls, I found the newly relaunched Lightraider Academy, and discovered the next adventure: The Moonbridge Raid. I ordered the books, and they arrived quickly.

The Moonbridge Raid would be a longer commitment...

I started reading through the Moonbridge Raid guidebooks, and knew it would take us awhile to work through it. I estimated about 9-12 sessions for the trilogy, possibly more. If we only played once a week, that would translate to over two months.

But those special character roles...

But the kids were really interested in the specialty roles for their characters. The rules say you need to complete three missions before you qualify for a special role (Adventure Master Manual, page 68). We had only done two. It wouldn't make sense for them to start to do Moonbridge part 1, and then suddenly have a lion for part 2, for example. That would be a plot hole in our character's story. I wanted to encourage them and keep the momentum, so we wanted them to earn their third mission before the Moonbridge Raid.

So which mission should we do?

I didn't know how to make a mission, yet. That left The Lightraider Test, or revisiting Thuella's domain. I told them we wouldn't "start over" with Thuella's domain, but would continue the story. A straight rerun would break the character's stories. I dabbled around with ideas for returning to Thuella's domain, but quickly felt like I was in over my head. My ideas were too big and too complex to nail down. It wouldn't have been a quick third mission to return to Thuella's domain. So I decided to put the ideas aside for the time being, and we settled on doing the Lightraider Test again.

The Third Mission: The Lightraider Test (again).

Characters:

Starflower, Edward, William and Philip, all on their third mission

Date in real life:

Saturday 29 May 2021

As we played, I quickly realized it was a mistake to do the Lightraider Test a second time. The sense of wonder and exploration was gone. The players rushed through the role playing (yeah, yeah, blah blah blah). And they were overconfident in combat, so that Starflower almost got killed by goblins. I had to send in a unicorn to take some goblin arrows, or else she wouldn't have made it.

I quietly resolved to never do a rerun again.

One funny thing was they still had some sleeping powder from the Rescue of the Sacred Scrolls, and they were quick thinking enough to throw it at the giant when they encountered him again.

Back to the Academy

After this mission, Starflower began training as a Lion Warrior, William signed up to be a Bear Knight, and Philip was appointed the Raid Leader. Edward did not qualify for a special role, yet.
