Cold Flame is a published mini-adventure from the Lightraider Academy. To gain access to it, you simply need to go to their website and sign up for their newsletter.

The story-telling style for this adventure is "on rails." It is a quick adventure, designed to be played through in one session.

The adventure introduces the rule of the XP (experience point). When characters perform physical feats (including battle), they gain xp, which they can use to Level up their character's strength or agility. Originally, there was no way to improve your strength or agility, so this modification addresses that.

This is also the first published adventure to feature a gall buzzard. Gall buzzards were described in the Lightraider Handbook, but had not shown up, yet. (Although an empty gall buzzard nest can be found in the Moonbridge raid).

The adventure comes complete with print and play maps, needed WordRunes, and the final scene is a fun action sequence.

Since this is a published adventure, I don't want to give away any spoilers, so we'll content ourselves with a brief snapshot of the story:

Starflower peered over the precipice. “Philip! Are you okay?” She saw him lying in the snow below them.

Philip groaned and moved his arms. “Yea, but I think I bruised my tailbone, or something.”

Starflower let out a breath. “He’s alive!” she shouted to the others. “Good thing there was lots of snow to cushion the fall!” she called back.

Philip struggled to his feet and brushed off his legs. He looked up at Starflower.

“I thought you were supposed to be skillful at climbing?” Edward called out from the east side of the ravine.

“It was slippery,” Philip said lamely.

“I think I’ll swing on the rope like Edward did,” Starflower commented. Edward was still holding the end of the rope on the other side of the ravine. The other end was attached firmly to the overhang he had managed to lasso.

“I can’t reach the rope,” Philip commented. “How am I going to get out of here?”

William looked down at Philip. “It’s not too deep. Ten feet, maybe? I bet Bill could give you a boost if he climbed down there.”

“As long as he’s careful!” Philip said. “I don’t want the bear to fall on me!”

Bill the bear lumbered over and looked down. “Think you can climb down that?” William asked him.

“Sure,” Bill grunted. He turned and backed over the edge, lowering his bulk into the ravine. Meanwhile, Regulus the lion leaped over the ravine carrying the end of the rope from Edward to Starflower.

“Climb aboard,” Bill told Philip. Philip clambered onto Bill’s shoulders, and Bill trudged to the opposite wall of rock as Starflower swung across on the rope. Bill stood up on his hind legs, and Philip was able to reach the top and pulled himself out.

“Wait, how do we get the bear out of the ravine, now?” Edward asked.
